Description: <span style="font-family:"Avenir Next W01", "Avenir Next W00", "Avenir Next", Avenir, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size:16px; max-width:100%; display:inherit;">Geoscience Australia map has 36,500 operational rail segments. 29,265 if excluding light rail, tramlines and overlapping tracks. Many of these are distractions that add a lot of complexity but is of little value to the processing and visualising of the train movement data.<span style="font-family:"Avenir Next W01", "Avenir Next W00", "Avenir Next", Avenir, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size:16px; max-width:100%; display:inherit;">
<span style="font-family:"Avenir Next W01", "Avenir Next W00", "Avenir Next", Avenir, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size:16px; max-width:100%; display:inherit;">Remaining railway features are joined together to form 7 contiguous standard/dual-gauge networks and 12 broad or narrow gauge networks. These are then split at 10,508 intersection points to form 7,312 and 9,744 non-branching segments respectively.<span style="font-family:"Avenir Next W01", "Avenir Next W00", "Avenir Next", Avenir, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size:16px; max-width:100%; display:inherit;">
<span style="font-family:"Avenir Next W01", "Avenir Next W00", "Avenir Next", Avenir, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size:16px; max-width:100%; display:inherit;">Tracks that run in parallel to each other in proximity have to be simplified because the imprecise nature of the train GPS pings will assign them randomly across multiple tracks. Assign the pings to sidings or passing loops also prevents train paths from being correctly inferred. 511 passing loops, 1,869 parallel tracks and 266 sidings were identified and removed algorithmically.<span style="font-family:"Avenir Next W01", "Avenir Next W00", "Avenir Next", Avenir, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size:16px; max-width:100%; display:inherit;">
<span style="font-family:"Avenir Next W01", "Avenir Next W00", "Avenir Next", Avenir, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size:16px; max-width:100%; display:inherit;">This also reduced the number of intersection points to 3,666 and allows for longer non-branching segments. Breaks are created to split these segments to ensure there is at least one intersection or break in the various boundaries it passes through.<span style="font-family:"Avenir Next W01", "Avenir Next W00", "Avenir Next", Avenir, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size:16px; max-width:100%; display:inherit;">
<span style="font-family:"Avenir Next W01", "Avenir Next W00", "Avenir Next", Avenir, "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; font-size:16px; max-width:100%; display:inherit;">There are 4,067 standard/dual and 5,704 broad or narrow gauge rail segments in the final spatial data that the NFDH refers to as the foundation rail map. The number of vertices in the lines are also reduced for visualisation purposes. This is combined with summarised data to produce the [ArcGIS_summary_n_tonnage] and [ArcGIS_summary_avg_speed] feature layers.
